Nendo's interpretation of Cabbage Chair:
nendo designed the cabbage chair for the 21st-century human exhibition hosted by Issey Miyake to commemorate the first anniversary of the 21st-century design landscape by Robben Kee in Tokyo.

Issey Miyake asked us to make furniture from pleated paper, which is mass-produced in the process of making pleated fabrics and is usually discarded as an unwanted by-product. Our solution to his challenge is to turn a roll of folded paper into a small chair. When you peel off its outer layer layer by layer, it looks natural.

The resin added in the initial paper production process increases the strength and the ability to remember the shape. The folds themselves give the chair elasticity and elasticity. The overall effect looks almost rough, but gives the user a soft and comfortable sitting experience.

Since the production process is so simple, we believe that in the end, the chair can be used as a compact roll for users to cut and peel off at home. This chair has no internal structure. It is not finished, and there are no nails and screws. This original design gently responds to manufacturing and distribution costs and environmental issues, which are the problems we faced in the 21st century. Therefore, the cabbage chair is suitable for the positive, optimistic, and enterprising "21st-century people". This kind of people borrowed a concept expressed by Issey Miyake when he met us, "not just wearing clothes, but molting".
