In 1921, Wells Coates graduated from the engineering department of Columbia University, and then in 1922-1924, he studied engineering decoration at the University of London. In 1923-1926, Coates became a reporter for the Russian Daily Express. During this period, he wrote from the perspective of a human being and regarded design as a catalyst for social change. Coates was involved in a wide range of design fields, including textile pattern design, interior design, small appliance design, etc. Beginning in 1923, Coates designed a series of radios made of phenolic bakelite for the Ekco Radio Company, including the famous Ekco AD65 radio. In this design, Coates absorbed the simplicity of modernism. The radio uses a circle, and the tuners are arranged in a semicircle around the speakers. As Coates said: "The sociality of the era determines the art of that era." His work is also a microcosm of the modernism that flourished in Britain in the 1930s.
