With the popularization of internet in China, modern Chinese is evolving into something that nobody can understand. New vocabularies are being created every second, meanings are being re-assigned, pronunciation is always changing, everything is quickly turning into a mess. "Comrade" now means "Gay", "Grass" means "Fuck", "Paratrooper" means "Idiot", "Barbecue" means "I'm screwed", etc. With the addition of Emoji, things get even worse. You can now write a whole paragraph in Emojis and some people would understand them just fine. This "new Chinese" not only flood the Internet, it also threatens the backbone of our language because meanings are being reassigned quickly and constantly.
"The Future of Language" is an imaginary exhibition/campaign that aims to raise concern on this specific topic. These posters were designed to visually showcase how bizarre modern Chinese has become. All images were generated through MidJourney AI, and each of them is describing a popular "new Chinese" word。
The Chinese language is the cornerstone of our culture. To cherish the future of our language is to cherish the future of the Chinese culture. This is why "The Future of Language" exist and these posters were designed. It begs people to ask themself a question: where are we heading? Should we completely embrace this new form of Chinese and let it merge into our daily life, or should we keep a certain distance with it?
For all Chinese people, this remains to be the question.
