Personal Notes:
This product is an appearance design case that I independently created during my tenure as ID design manager of China Mobile Group, designed in 2023 and completed mass production and listing in 2024. The belated design sharing hopes to provide some thinking and resonance to friends in the design industry.
Product Overview:
The traditional fiber to the home (FTTH) solution is that the operator will lay the fiber line to the user's home, and then use the wireless router to build the WiFi network. The difference is that China Mobile FTTR FXM6000 series is a set of gigabit optical fiber network directly arranged to each room of the whole house network coverage scheme. Users can seamlessly connect to Gigabit WiFi networks or ports using Gigabit bandwidth, regardless of location movement and signal attenuation through walls. FTTR FXM6000 series adopts unified elements and hidden wire design, which not only has a simple appearance, but also helps to enhance the image of China Mobile brand.
Product pain points:
All of our designers have personally experienced the front line, and after conducting a large number of on-the-spot visits to users (combined with street visits and family appointments and telephone return visits), we have summarized the core pain points of users of all ages, which are roughly as follows:
1. When users move indoors, the network will be delayed or temporarily disconnected through the wall;
2. The network equipment needs to weaken the equipment attribute;
3. Let the messy wiring disappear;
4. The process of equipment installation and product key setting is complicated;
5, household products do not interfere with the user's night rest;
6. As one of the largest operators, China Mobile needs to form a unified brand family sense/serialization style and establish users' trust in the brand.
Design Process Method:
Different from the traditional appearance design, we reshaped and optimized the new project process. In the conceptual design stage of the scheme, we set up our own market user research team, divided into groups and provinces, and strive to let every R & D designer visit hundreds of target users' families in person. Truly mining the user's pain points and feedback, so that the scheme design is more practical. In the research and development stage, we have verified and optimized the functional design of the scheme more than ten times through our own professional rapid 3D printing laboratory and combined with external high-precision hand-run models, so as to make every detail of the product design more in line with the user experience.
User Value and Design Objectives:
In order to solve the user pain points, we designed and developed China Mobile FXM6000 series FTTR gateway. Through FTTR equipment such as master gateway, slave gateway, optical splitter and optical fiber panel, we can introduce gigabit optical fiber network into every room to achieve the purpose of full house coverage of gigabit optical fiber network. In the end, users can directly and smoothly connect gigabit WiFi signals or optical fiber networks through terminal products such as mobile phones, tablet computers and notebooks, and the network speed will not be affected when walking around the room.
